Festival Fokus

Mit dem aktuell relevanten Thema „Grenzen und Freiheit“ betrachten wir durch unser Festivalprogramm das Spannungsfeld zweier scheinbar gegensätzlicher Begriffe, die trotzdem immer in Verbindung stehen und die von uns als Betrachter*innen stetig ausgehandelt und verändert werden. Besonders im Mittelpunkt steht dies in unserer Filmkategorie Project-K-Selection, mit Filmen wie 3670, The Land of Morning Calm und Hear Me: Our Summer. Die Retrospektive ist in diesem Jahr dem Regisseur PARK Chan-wook gewidmet – wir zeigen seine international bekannten Filme The Handmaiden und Decision to Leave. In der Kategorie Blockbuster erwarten euch Highlights wie Yadang: The Snitch, Harbin und Hitman 2. Mit The Sense of Violence zeigen wir euch in der Kategorie Dokumentation eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Antikommunismus in Korea und auf spannende Filme wie What Does That Nature Say to You, My Best, Your Least und FAQ dürft ihr euch in der Kategorie Indie freuen.

Um neuen Filmschaffenden eine größere Sichtbarkeit zu verschaffen, verleihen wir zudem im Rahmen unseres Wettbewerbs für ambitionierte junge Filmemacher*innen zum zweiten Mal in Folge den KFFF Newcomer-Preis, der dieses Jahr ein Publikumspreis ist.

Als weiteres Highlight des Festivals bietet euch der im Rahmen des Festivals veranstaltete Korea Culture Day in der jugend-kultur-kirche sankt peter, zahlreiche Angebote an. Dort laden wir euch mit einem abwechslungsreichen Bühnenprogramm, Workshops, verschiedenen Ständen und kulinarischen Highlights dazu ein, in die vielfältige Kultur Koreas einzutauchen.

Gäste und Panels

Ab 17 Uhr könnt ihr live dabei sein, wenn POCHA TALK eine neue Podcast-Folge auf unserer Bühne aufzeichnet. Mit Lisa vor Ort, Delilah aus Korea zugeschaltet und Filmemacher Myong-Hun Oh als Special Guest erwarten euch spannende Gespräche rund um Film, Kultur und Korea.

Regisseur PARK Ri-woong studierte Film an der Korea National University of Arts. Sein Debütfilm The Girl on a Bulldozer (2021) feierte Premiere beim Busan International Film Festival und brachte ihm den Preis als Bester Nachwuchsregisseur bei den Grand Bell Awards ein. Mit seinem zweiten Spielfilm The Land of Morning Calm (2024) gewann er mehrere internationale Auszeichnungen, darunter den New Currents Award in Busan. 

Er kombiniert in seinen Filmen oft verschiedene Genres miteinander und beschäftigt sich häufig mit dunklen, psychologischen Themen, die auf subtile Weise die Abgründe menschlicher Emotionen und Beziehungen erforschen. Dabei gelingt es ihm, komplexe Charaktere und die Atmosphäre geschickt zu gestalten, was seine Werke besonders spannend und vielschichtig macht. Überzeugt euch selbst beim Live-Interview auf der Bühne des Korea Culture Day – oder beim Screening von The Land of Morning Calm mit persönlicher Einführung des Regisseurs und anschließendem Q&A.

Ab 20:00 Uhr erwartet euch beim Korea Culture Day eine spannende Paneldiskussion zum Festivalthema “Grenzen und Freiheit” mit dem Schauspieler Danny Lee, Regisseur Hae-sup Sin und Musikwissenschaftlerin Dr. Yookyung Nho-von Blumröder, die ihre Erfahrungen und Perspektiven auf die koreanische Medien- und Kulturlandschaft teilen:

Hae-Sup Sin (1991 geboren) ist ein schweizerisch-koreanischer Regisseur aus Opfikon (ZH). An der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (ZHdK) entdeckte er seine Leidenschaft für kulturübergreifende Geschichten im Film. Aktuell arbeitet er an seinem ersten Langspielfilm Some Korean Summer.

Danny Lee ist ein deutsch-koreanischer Schauspieler, der aktuell in der Serie Der Mann im Mond auf Amazon Prime zu sehen ist. Für seine herausragende Darstellung des Pete in Songkran wurde er mit dem Award of Excellence bei den IndieFest Film Awards in den Vereinigten Staaten ausgezeichnet.

Dr. Yookyung Nho-von Blumröder ist an der Universität zu Köln tätig, wo sie sowohl im Fach Musikwissenschaft als auch im Bereich Koreanisch lehrt. An der Philosophischen Fakultät promovierte sie mit einer Arbeit über die Musik Younghi Pagh-Paans. Darüber hinaus leitet sie das von ihr gegründete koreanische Musikensemble K-YUL.

Bühnenprogramm

Faszinierende Einblicke in die koreanische Kultur und Musik bieten euch unter anderem verschiedene Acts im Rahmen unseres Bühnenprogramms. Von K-Pop Cover-Dances, über eine spektakuläre Taekwondo-Show bis hin zu traditionellem Tanz aufgeführt von Euka Tanz e. V. – hier ist garantiert für jeden Geschmack etwas dabei und für beste Unterhaltung gesorgt.

Wenn ihr selbst aktiv werden möchtet, könnt ihr eurer Kreativität etwa bei der Herstellung eurer ganz individuellen Souvenirs aus dem traditionellen koreanischen Papier „Hanji“ freien Lauf lassen. Freunde und Interessierte des K-Beauty kommen natürlich auch nicht zu kurz und können sich am Stand von Nostalutions aus Düsseldorf unter anderem ihrer persönlichen Farbanalyse unterziehen.

Weiterhin laden zahlreiche Stände euch dazu ein, zu verschiedenen Themen über Korea und koreanische Kultur ins Gespräch zu kommen und diese hautnah zu erleben, zum Beispiel beim Knipsen von Erinnerungsfotos im Hanbok in unserer Fotobox, an unserem Spiele- oder K-Pop-Stand oder an den Info-Ständen des Generalkonsulats der Republik Korea Frankfurt sowie der Region Jeollanamdo. Ein kleines Extra für euch gibt es auch: Ihr habt die Chance, bei unserer Stempel-Rallye mitzumachen und durch das Besuchen aller Stände eine unserer Goodie-Bags zu ergattern.

Für euer leibliches Wohl ist natürlich ebenfalls gesorgt. So zeigt uns Sunbap, wie man beliebte koreanische Gerichte auch in vegan genießen kann, und Gangnam Kitchen bereitet für euch eine spannende Auswahl koreanischer Streetfoods zu. Eine authentische Erfahrung koreanischer Kulinarik wäre natürlich nicht komplett ohne dazu passenden Getränke und so könnt Ihr euch bei unserem Soju-Tasting durch eine große Bandbreite des beliebten Reisschnaps testen.

Filmprogramm und der KFFF Newcommer Award

Mit unserem bislang umfangreichsten Filmprogramm präsentieren wir euch in den Kategorien Blockbuster, Indie, Dokumentation, Retrospektive und Project-K-Selection insgesamt 30 Spielfilme unter dem diesjährigen Fokus „Grenzen und Freiheit“. Unsere  Vorführungen finden statt im CineStar Metropolis, im Arthouse Kino Eldorado, im DFF – Deutsches Filminstitut Filmmuseum sowie – erstmals – auch im Massif E.
Die Nominierten des KFFF Newcomer Awards 2025

Aller Anfang ist schwer, sei es beim neuen Hobby, im Beruf oder beim Einstieg in die Filmbranche. Filmfestivals sind wichtige Plattformen, die insbesondere Newcomer*innen die Chance bieten, ihre Arbeiten einem Publikum zu präsentieren. Das Korean Film Festival Frankfurt will Neulinge noch intensiver unterstützen und hat dafür im letzten Jahr das erste Mal den KFFF Newcomer Award vergeben. Aus drei Kurzfilmen wählte die Jury KIM Jae-woos Film Kid’s Land als Gewinner aus.

Der zweite KFFF Newcomer Award hat ein neues Konzept. Er ist ein Publikumspreis und wir brauchen dafür eure Stimmen: Es treten fünf ausgewählte Filme aus dem Festivalprogramm an, die der erste oder zweite Langspielfilm der Regisseur*innen sind. Und das Wichtigste dabei seid ihr – denn ihr seid unsere Jury und entscheidet, wer den Publikumspreis gewinnen soll!

Die Abstimmung ist dabei ganz einfach und sowohl analog als auch digital möglich. Analog könnt ihr nach der Filmvorstellung euren Stimmzettel in eine unserer Voting-Boxen einwerfen. Diesen bekommt ihr beim Einlass in den Kinosaal. Um abzustimmen, reißt einfach die Schulnote von eins bis sechs ein, die ihr dem Film geben würdet. Alternativ könnt ihr vor den Kinosälen einen QR-Code scannen und eure Note online abgeben.

Die Filmprogramm Gruppe des Festivals schickt folgende Filme ins Rennen: In 3670 von PARK Joon-ho geht es um einen nordkoreanischen Geflüchteten, der sich sowohl in einem neuen Land wie in seiner Identität als schwuler Mann zurechtfinden muss. The Burglars von KIM Tae-hwi erzählt in Roadtrip-Manier von einem ungleichen Duo, die ineinander unerwartete Seelenverwandte finden. KIM Da-min erzählt in F.A.Q. die Welt und ihre Rätsel aus der Sicht der Grundschülerin Dong-chun, die eine sprechende Flasche Reiswein findet. The Land of Morning Calm von PARK Ri-woong beschäftigt sich mit dem Plan des jungen Fischers Yong-su, durch Betrug an das Geld seiner Lebensversicherung zu kommen, um seiner Familie ein besseres Leben schenken zu können. The Sense of Violence ist eine Dokumentation von KIM Moo-young, die anhand von originalen Filmmaterialien aus den 60er und 70er Jahren die Ideologie des Antikommunismus in Südkorea nachzeichnet.

Through our festival programme, we explore the currently relevant theme of ‘Borders and Freedom’, examining the tension between two seemingly contradictory concepts that are nevertheless always interconnected and which we, as viewers, are constantly negotiating and reshaping. This is a particular focus of our Project-K-Selection film category, featuring films such as 3670, The Land of Morning Calm and Hear Me: Our Summer. This year’s retrospective is dedicated to director PARK Chan-wook – we are screening his internationally acclaimed films The Handmaiden and Decision to Leave. In the Blockbuster category, highlights such as Yadang: The Snitch, Harbin and Hitman 2 await you. In the Documentary category, The Sense of Violence offers an exploration of anti-communism in Korea, whilst in the Indie category you can look forward to exciting films such as What Does That Nature Say to You, My Best, Your Least and FAQ.

To give emerging filmmakers greater visibility, we are also awarding the KFFF Newcomer Prize for the second year running as part of our competition for ambitious young filmmakers; this year, it takes the form of an audience award.

Another highlight of the festival is Korea Culture Day, held as part of the festival at the Jugend-Kultur-Kirche Sankt Peter, which offers a wide range of activities. There, we invite you to immerse yourselves in Korea’s diverse culture through a varied stage programme, workshops, various stalls and culinary highlights.

Be part of the audience at 5 p.m. when POCHA TALK takes the stage for a live podcast recording. With Lisa on site, Delilah joining us online from Korea and filmmaker Myong-Hun Oh as a special guest, you can look forward to exciting conversations about film, culture, and Korea.

Director PARK Ri-woong studied filmmaking at Korea National University of Arts. His debut film, The Girl on a Bulldozer (2021), premiered at the Busan International Film Festival and earned him the Best New Director award at the Grand Bell Awards. His second feature film, The Land of Morning Calm (2024), won several international awards, including the New Currents Award in Busan. 

He often combines different genres in his films. He frequently deals with dark, psychological themes that subtly explore the depths of human emotions and relationships. In doing so, he succeeds in skillfully crafting complex characters and atmospheres, which makes his works particularly exciting and multi-layered. See for yourself at the interview at Korea Culture Day – or at the screening of The Land of Morning Calm with a short introduction of the director and and a Q&A session afterwards:

Starting at 8 p.m., the Korea Culture Day featured an engaging panel discussion on the festival topic “Boundaries and Freedom” with actor Danny Lee, director Hae-sup Sin and musicologist Dr. Yookyung Nho-von Blumröder, who shared their experiences and perspectives on the Korean media and cultural landscape:

Hae-Sup Sin (born in 1991) is a Swiss-Korean director from Opfikon (ZH). At Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), he discovered his passion for cross-cultural stories in film. He is currently working on his first feature film, Some Korean Summer.

Danny Lee is a German-Korean actor who can currently be seen in the series The Man in the Moon on Amazon Prime. He received the Award of Excellence at the IndieFest Film Awards in the United States for his outstanding portrayal of Pete in Songkran.

Dr. Yookyung Nho-von Blumröder works at the University of Cologne where she teaches both in the field of Musicology and in Korean Studies. At the Faculty of Philosophy she earned her PhD with a dissertation on the music of Younghi Pagh-Paans. In addition, she directs the Korean music ensemble K-YUL, which she founded herself.

Bühnenprogramm

Fascinating insights into Korean culture and music will be provided among other activities by the various acts forming the line up of this year’s stage program. From K-Pop Cover-Dances and a spectacular Taekwondo-show, to a traditional dance performance by Euka Tanz e. V. – there surely is something matching everyone’s tastes and ensuring that entertainment is guaranteed.

If you would like to get active yourselves, feel free to get creative, for example by making your own unique souvenirs made from “Hanji“, the traditional Korean paper. Friends of and those interested in Korean skincare won’t have to miss out either, as they can get their own personal color matching at the booth of Nostalutions, who are coming from Düsseldorf to meet you.

Additionally, various booths are inviting you to immerse yourselves in conversations about Korea and Korean culture and to experience it first hand. For example by trying on Hanbok and taking a commemorative photo in our photo box, by participating in games at our traditional Korean game booth, by talking about Korean music at our K-pop stall or by learning more about Korea at the booths of the General Consulate of Korea in Frankfurt and the representatives of the Jeollanamdo region. As a little extra, there is even the chance to win one of our goodie bags by visiting all the booths when participating in our Stamp-Challenge.

Of course your food cravings will be well taken care of, as well, as Sunbap will be showing us how to prepare popular Korean dishes in a vegan way, while Gangam Kitchen will be offering an exciting selection of Korean street foods. Since an authentic Korean culinary experience would not be complete without matching drinks, there will also be the opportunity to try a variation of the famous Korean rice wine by participating in a Soju-tasting.

Film Programm und der KFFF Audience Award

With our most extensive film programme to date, we are presenting a total of 30 feature films across the categories of Blockbusters, Indie, Documentaries, Retrospectives and Project K Selection, all under this year’s theme of ‘Borders and Freedom’. Our screenings will take place at CineStar Metropolis, the Eldorado arthouse cinema, the DFF – German Film Institute Film Museum and – for the first time – at Massif E.
KFFF Audience Awards 2025

Whether it’s a new hobby, a job or getting a foot in the door in the movie industry, every new beginning is hard work. For new filmmakers, festivals are important platforms to have a chance to show their work to an audience. The Korean Film Festival Frankfurt wants to support new directors and initiated the KFFF Newcomer Award for the first time last year. Out of three short films, a jury chose KIM Jae-woo’s Kid’s Land as the winner.

The second KFFF Newcomer Award has a new concept: It will be an audience award and therefore we need your votes. Five films from the festival line-up that have to be the director’s first or second feature-length film will be going up against each other. The most important thing is you! You will be our jury and decide which of these films is going to win the audience award.

You have two options for casting your vote: either on paper or digitally. Upon entering the auditorium you will have the opportunity to receive a ballot paper, which you can place in one of our voting boxes before you leave. Just assign the film a grade between one and six by tearing the paper in the according place, with one being the best, six the worst grade. Or, you can scan the QR code in front of the cinemas’ auditoriums and enter your grade online.

The festival’s film program team chose the following films to be part of the competition: In 3670 by PARK Joon-ho, a North Korean refugee does not only have to navigate life in a new country, but also his identity as a gay man. The Burglars by KIM Tae-hwi tells a roadtrip story of a duo who find unexpected soulmates in each other despite their individual differences. In F.A.Q. KIM Da-min tells the story of the world and its secrets from the perspective of elementary school student Dong-chung, who finds a speaking bottle of rice wine. The Land of Morning Calm by PARK Ri-woong deals with young fisherman Yong-su’s plan to commit fraud in order to receive his life insurance money and give his family a better life. The Sense of Violence is a documentary by KIM Moo-young, which traces the ideology of anti-communism in South Korea using original film materials from the 60s and 70s.

The award ceremony will be taking place on the last festival day. In case you can’t be there in person to see whether your favorite won, don’t worry: you can be part of the ceremony by joining the announcement of the winner on our Instagram channel projectkffm.
